Thomas Nagel And His Article On Death

Thomas Nagel begins his collection of essays with a most intriguing discussion about death. Death being one of the most obviously important subjects of contemplation, Nagel takes an interesting approach as he tries to define the truth as to whether death is, or is not, a harm for that individual. Nagel does a brilliant job in attacking this issue from all sides and viewpoints, and it only makes sense that he does it this way in order to make his own observations more credible.

He begins by looking at the very common views of death that are held by most people in the world, and tells us that he will talk of death as the “unequivocal and permanent end to our existence” and look directly at the nature of death itself (1). The first view that Nagel decides to discuss is the view that death is bad for us because it deprives us of more life. Most people are in the view that life is good; even though some experiences in life can be bad, and sometimes tragic, the nature of life itself is a very positive state. Nagel also adds that when the experiences of life are put aside, this state is still positive, and not simply “neutral” (2).

Nagel goes further to point out some important observations about the value of life. Mere “organic survival” cannot be said to be a component of value (2). Nagel gives the example of death and being in a coma before dying. Both of these situations would be equally bad situations. Another observation is that “like most goods” the value can become greater with time (2).

Looking now at what is bad about death instead of what is good about life, Nagel presents some obvious thoughts regarding this point. Life is good because we have the conscious ability to experience and appreciate all that life has to offer. So death is bad because it deprives us of these experiences, not because the actual state of death is bad for us.

The next point that Nagel makes is that there are certain indications that show how people do not object to death simply because it “involves long periods of nonexistence” (3). It is said that people would not look at the temporary “suspension” of life as a terrible misfortune, because the fact that it is temporary tells us that this will ultimately bring the state back to that of conscious life. Also, we do not look at the state being before we are born as a misfortune, or deprivation of life, because that life has not yet begun and, (as Nagel states later), he refutes the possible argument that the person could have been born earlier and had more life, with the fact that if that person was born substantially earlier, he would cease to be that person, but instead someone else entirely.

Nagel discusses next three problems. The first is a view that there are no evils that are not rooted in a person consciously “minding” those evils. Nagel puts this view in to easier terms by saying that this is the same as saying “what you don’t know can’t hurt you” (4). There are several examples that can illustrate this theory. People who think this way would say that it is not a harm for a person to be ridiculed behind his back, if he doesn’t know about it. If he doesn’t experience the evil, it is not bad for him. Nagel thinks this view is wrong. The natural discovery here is that it is bad to be betrayed, this is what makes the whole situation unfortunate; not because the discovery of this betrayal makes us unhappy.

The second problem is that which has to do with who the subject of harm caused by death is, and when exactly this occurs. Harm can be experienced by a person before death, nothing can be experienced after death, so when is death itself experienced as a harm? The third problem deals with posthumous and prenatal existence.

Contemplating the good or bad aspects of death, Nagel observes that we must look at the possible circumstances surrounding a death, and the pertinent history of the person who dies. This is important because we miss a lot that is important to the argument if what we take into consideration is exclusively the state of the person at the moment of death. Nagel gives an example of a very intelligent man sustaining an injury that causes him to regress to the mental capacity of an infant. His needs can be fulfilled like those of an infant and be kept happy as long as simple needs are met. His family and friends would look at this as a terrible misfortune, even though the man himself is not aware of his loss. This situation is unfortunate because of the deprivation of what might have been had he not been injured in this way. He could have gone on to accomplish great things for the world and his family, and live out his life through old age as an accomplished and acclaimed individual. This would have lead him to great happiness, but it can be observed that this same man in a state of mental capacity to match that of a child is also happy, but Nagel agrees that what happened to this man is a tragedy because of the terrible loss of the life the intelligent man could have led. This situation can relate to death in this way of thinking about deprivation. Death is bad because it robs you of what could have been.

After making these observations, Nagel states that “This case should convince us that it is arbitrary to restrict the goods and evils that can befall a man to non-relational properties ascribable to him at particular times” (6). There are endless circumstances and happenings going on that affect a person’s fortune or misfortune. Many of these never coincide directly to the person’s life. We must consider that there is no way to pinpoint the exact position of a misfortune in a person’s life, nor a way to define the origin. People have dreams and goals in life that may or may not be fulfilled. There is no way to find all of the circumstances and possibilities that go into whether or not these hopes and dreams are eventually fulfilled, but Nagel tells us that we must simply accept that “If death is an evil, it must be accounted for in these terms, and the impossibility of locating it within life should not trouble us” (7).

There are some who view the time before birth and the time after death as the same. We exist in neither, though Nagel argues that there is a difference. This whole essay has expressed exactly his view that though we do not exist in either case, death deprives us of time that we could have been living our lives.

Nagel makes an interesting observation about whether we can assign as a misfortune an event or aspect of life which is normal to all humans in general. We all know that we all will die and that the maximum amount of life is somewhere around 100 years. So is it still plausible to say this is a misfortune? He also gives the example of moles, which are blind. It is not a misfortune for a mole to be blind because they are all blind, and they will never know sight and be able to appreciate it. But Nagel also presents the example of a situation in which everyone goes through six months of pain and anguish before dying. Everyone knows that this is going to happen, but does that make the event any less of an event to dread and fear?

We are brought into this world and brought up with aspects of our lives that we appreciate. The deprivation of these things that we learn to appreciate is a misfortune, because we have learned to live with these privileges. It is unfathomable for a human being to grasp the concept of a finite life, in the truest meaning of understanding. We do not think of our lives right now as a set out plan or a finite sequence of events. We do not live day to day thinking of what we should do according to how much time we have left. Our lives are essentially an open-ended sequence of good and bad circumstances and possibilities. Death is the abrupt interruption of this sequence that we cannot help but be in the mindset will never end. This is how death is a deprivation, and ultimately, a bad thing for a person.

In conclusion, Nagel offers a good argument in his essay on death about death itself being a harm. Whether a person believes in the immortal life or not, it must still be considered that dying deprives you of the goods and experiences of life. This view seems unavoidable. A person who dies at age 92 has lived a full life to the best of his ability and has experienced more than someone who dies at age 32. The person dying at age 32 had many things that he wished to accomplish and experience in his life, and since the event of death has taken away all possibility of any of these goals coming to pass, and undermines all the work that he has put forth up to that point in pursuit of his goals, death is a terrible tragedy for him.

What Is Your Rate?

What is your rate?

This is the one question on every business owner's mind, especially because renewal prices are generally trending upward. They ask the question as if they are buying gasoline, or an oil change for a car. If the gas station a few blocks down the street has a better price per gallon, then we go there. Every penny counts! This is the working mindset for commodity product shopping, toothpaste, shampoo, cotton swabs … whatever. We purchase it, use it up, throw away the empty package and go buy more. No brainer, easy!

Procuring energy for your business in today's market is not that simple. Unlike comparing gasoline prices at two different stations blocks apart on the same day, business owners do not typically have a way to compare multiple offers simultaneously. There are a lot more factors that go into the price / rate of energy procurement. Whomever you ask "What's your Rate?" needs some information from you in order to render a credible answer. They need to know usage, seasonal fluctuations, changes in use pattern, when your current contract ends, green energy requirements, bandwidth requirements, and so much more.

A much better question to ask your energy supplier rep would be: What is covered by your quoted rate? There are 7 factors that every energy supplier is legally obligated to pay. Your rate can cover all of them. However, not all rates cover all 7 factors. When all 7 factors are covered by the quoted rate, the rate is a fixed rate. When some factors are not included in your rate, your rate is variable. Those factors that are not covered by your rate will have to be paid somewhere. So you will either have monthly rate fluctuations or monthly line items added to your invoice. Both the fixed rate and variable rate products have their appropriate uses. The energy consumer must be advised on the different outcomes to be expected in total out-of-pocket expenses for their energy.

Then there are contract language considerations. Some contracts are very tight; others have a tremendous amount of wiggle room from the supplier. Some have stricter payment history requirements; I can not know what any company qualifies for without a fair amount of information from you, the business owner. I want to help you save time and money over time.

I recently had a meeting with a large independent grocery store owner. He just completed a renovation complete with lighting upgrades. He went from fluorescent tubes to LED lighting. His usage reduced enough to generate an addition bandwidth fee. The fee made his lighting upgrade not profitable in the short run. A thorough review of contract language could have saved this owner quite a bit of money.

Procuring energy for your business is more complex than rate shopping. Rate shopping wastes your time and your money.

You can start the process by having a utility bill audit. There is no up-front cost to you, and we may find that your company is eligible to receive hundreds of dollars each year in discounts and credits because your utility had been charging you incorrectly. You do not even need to change suppliers. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

How To Read Jewelry Marks

The number markings on precious gold jewelry are a bit of confusion to lots of people. We are generally used to seeing a karat or silver mark like this: 10K, 14K, 18K, Sterling, etc. The numbers mean the same thing.

For 14k the number is technically 583 but most manufacturers adopted the European way and make 14k gold a tiny bit over 14k, so the mark is 585 in most 14k jewelry. 18K is marked 750. If the mark is valid and there is a makers mark also in the jewelry, the number means these items are 18k gold.

Here is where the numbers come from. Pure gold is called 24 karat. For 18k gold, there are 18 parts of pure gold mixed with other metals to make the metal suitable for use in jewelry. 24k is too soft alone to stand up or to hold stones well. 18 parts pure gold divided by 24, or 18/24 equals 750. That is where the number comes from. The jewelry is 75% pure gold, 750 parts gold with 250 parts other metals out of “1000” parts. It is easier to think of it as a percent which is pure gold in the recipe.

Sterling silver is marked 925. Sterling is 92.5% pure silver and the rest is other metal, generally copper.

What does it mean if the ring marked 14K PR? The 14K simply means it is 14K (Karat) gold and because of the K means it would have been made in either South East Asia or The United States. The PR marks are just the Maker or Store ID or even a design mark, and have no relevance to the Value.

The basic decimal formula to work out the quality of gold content is quite simple, as they are all measured in ‘Parts per Thousand.’ This means that 9ct gold is calculated like this: 9 (for 9ct) is divided by pure gold (24) and then multiplied by 1000 (for pure gold as a decimal). ie: 9/24*1000=375 That 375 is the decimal quality for 9ct gold and is sometimes shown with a decimal point in front – .375

The old Victorian standard of 15ct gold is calculated the same way – 15/24*1000 = 625 (Not quite the numbers you have on your jewelry. Dental gold is 16ct or 666 recurring. But you can also reverse this formula by starting with the decimal and working back. ie: 375/1000*24 = 9

In your case we can use 698/1000*24 = almost 17ct

I have a platinum engagement ring and found a wedding ring that I really like but the band is made of palladium. Is it safe to wear these two metals together without one damaging the other?

It will wear the softer metal OVER TIME but that could take many years. My Grandmothers wedding ring eventually wore away the band of her engagement ring but it took over 20 years to do.

Platinum and Palladium and quite good together but I would take the advice of your local friendly jeweler and have them check both rings. Sometimes the Platinum may be a lower grade in order to make it harder – so have that checked.

Find Birth Date by Social Security Number

The social security number is a very handy tool to detect identity theft and frauds due to concealment of vital information. You can find out all the details of an individual provided that you know the correct social security number associated with that particular individual.

The database associated with the social security number is the most authentic and reliable in terms of information provided. The numbers are assigned by the central office at the time of the birth of the person for all the citizens of the United States of America. Therefore, the database maintained by the central government under the social security department can help you find out the exact date of birth of any individual born in the United States of America by their SSN. This can be very helpful to people who tend to forget peoples birth dates that are close to them.

The information age, as the present era is known, there is very easy accessibility to various information with the help of computers and the World Wide Web network. These technologies have made life very easy for humans because you can access any information from anywhere in the world. All you need to search for is the correct authentic links. There are many websites that offer you a chance to find birth dates by SSN. If you have the SSN of the individual, then you can logon to any of these websites and access the database to find out the date of birth of the individual.

Firearms Background Checks in Tennessee, Not To Be Feared

Gun shops, as Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) handle hundreds of thousands of background checks every year for their customers. It can be a somewhat emotionally charged process for the purchaser. You have decided to purchase a firearm. You have shopped. You have found the one that fits you and worked out the best price with the dealer you want to work with. You are ready to buy. Now comes the background check. If you are new to this process, some nervousness and uncertainty are not uncommon. What will the result be? Will you be able to purchase the firearm that you already feel is yours, or will all your careful work making your selection be for naught? It can be even more nerve-wracking if you are trying to reclaim a firearm that you have put into pawn temporarily, a family heirloom perhaps. Most gun and pawn shops have seen just about every scenario. While complications do happen, this does not have to be a fear-filled process.

A little knowledge helps to ease most fears. First, lets give a little exposition about what the background check system is. Background checks for firearm purchases became the law of the land with the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, and on November 1st, 1998 Individual states were given the option to use the national system for this or establish their own. In my state, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation began TICS, or the TBI Instant Checks System. The Tennessee State Legislature mandated that the system must meet or exceed the requirements established by The Brady Act. In addition to the check against the TBI’s records, the TICS unit runs a check against the NICS (National Instant Check System) on both the prospective purchaser and the firearm they intend to purchase. This assures that the person is legally able to purchase a firearm and that there is nothing negative in the history of the firearm itself, in the case of previously owned firearms.

The details of running the check are fairly simple. The FFL (Federal Firearm Licensee or gun dealer) collects ten dollars, all of which is later remitted to the state for the check. The prospective buyer enters their identity information into the TICS web site, and the dealer confirms it is you by way of your state issued photo ID. Don’t forget to bring your license! Usually in pretty short order, the result will come back. Sometimes, however, the check can take longer. Computers can go down and or run slowly. It is usually best to leave about 30 minutes before your gun shop closes to start your background check so you have time to complete your purchase.

So all well and good, but what about the results? All states produce a result of ‘Approved’ or ‘Denied’. Approved means there was nothing in the check to hold up the process. Denied means that something in the check came back that might preclude the purchase either on the firearm or on the purchaser. It is also important to know that this is a rare instance. On average from 1999 to 2010, only about 2% of purchases were denied due to a background check. If the denial is about the purchaser’s background, the good news is that the results of the check can be appealed. It is important to remember that sometimes, incorrect, incomplete or outdated information can still reside on peoples’ records even after it is supposed to be cleared up. Any of this can be for a whole range of reasons. Of those denied which were appealed, well over half were overturned and the purchaser was able to proceed with their purchase. Just remember, if you think you have been denied and should not have been, you can appeal, and your gun shop will have information on how to start your appeal process.

In addition to ‘Approved’ and ‘Denied’, a few states, Tennessee included, will also sometimes return a result of ‘Conditional Proceed’. Essentially what this means is that there was something in the background check, upon which the system could not resolve the disposition. The law states that the gun dealer may, ‘at their sole discretion’ release the firearm to the purchaser. This opens up a whole litany of potential post sale complications, including the necessity of reclaiming the firearm by BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives).

I do not particularly like the fact that Tennessee offers the ‘Conditional Proceed’ result for a number of reasons. First the customer is paying for an answer; either a yes or a no, not uncertainty. Second, it legally exposes the gun shop to potential civil law suit. We live in a country where anyone can sue anyone for anything at any time, and frequently do. An honest gun shop owner does not need the family of a thug suing them because they made the decision at their ‘sole discretion’ to sell a firearm to a person who used it to legally defend themselves from said thug for instance. It has happened to dealers before. I believe that a smart shop owner will only release a firearm to a purchaser who passes the background check with an ‘Approved’ result. Rather than selling a firearm to a person at their sole discretion, a smart shop owner will rely on the government to provide the discretion. Unfortunately the ‘Conditional Proceed’ result can create confusion and frustration when a dealer will not release a firearm based on this dubious result. Among the gun shop dealers that I know, I don’t know of a single one who will release on ‘Conditional Proceed’. Just like with a ‘Denied’ result, a ‘Conditional Proceed’ can be overturned through the same appeal process.

What is important to remember about background checks for firearm purchases is that the process is not about judging your worth as a person. They are about making sure that firearms are only sold to people who are legally allowed to purchase them. Sometimes the systems employed by the government are slow or incomplete in their information. If you believe that you should legally be allowed to exercise your Second Amendment rights, but your background check says otherwise, there is a recourse. While it will often take several days or sometimes even a few weeks to get the result changed to reflect the correct information, all is not lost. Just follow the rules and be patient. So, remember to bring your driver’s license, leave about 30 minutes before the store closes for the background check, be patient and breathe easy. Your gun shop owner and or dealer is there to help.

Under 65 Disabled Medicare

Many questions come up with it comes to Medicare, let alone when you are under 65 and disabled. The steps of the things you need to do or the things you know are not quite as clear as you would like it to be. If you do not register everything within a window that the government provides, you could be penalized. The penalty will be costing you more money than you had expected. Someone who qualifies for SS Disability income has a waiting period of two years before eligible for Medicare A and B. This could be a long time to wait if you need insurance.

If you were gainfully employed, you would be offered coverage through your job. If you had to take a leave of absence as a result of the qualifying disability, you would be provided COBRA to extend the coverage you had from your previous employer. The COBRA option could let you pay for the health insurance for up to 18 months, and in some cases you can get 24 or 36 months, depending on the situation. That will buy you some time to transition to Medicare Disability.

If you fall short of the premiums due to cash flow for COBRA, there might be a chance you could qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid is a health program available through the state. They do have their own set of requirements to qualify. Refer to your state guidelines to apply. Then your health care will be a nominal cost to you, paid by the state.

Once you have met your two-year waiting period for disability to be eligible for Medicare coverage, you have a window to do other things to stay compliant. The government requires to have a Part D coverage; D is for Drugs. Original Medicare does not supply this except for inpatient medication. They give you a window of about three to four months to purchase a Part D. Typically it’s the month of the start of Part B (supplied by Original Medicare), and then 90 days after that month. If you do not sign up for a Part D, or equivalent, during this time frame, you will be penalized when you finally do sign up for it. Medicare requires this to allow more people to pay in to control the cost for everyone.

If your state requires insurers to offer Medicare Supplemental insurance for the under 65 disabled, then you are allowed to apply with no underwriting involved during the same time frame. You will notice that the premium are much higher for those under 65 years of age than if you were 65 and older. Part of it is that you are on Medicare early because you have a disability, it means you are more likely to have more claims. Either way, you have an opportunity to apply for a plan that has to underwrite and take advantage of the lower rates without being screened for the health condition. However, in some states, like Indiana, does not require the insurance companies to participate in the under 65 disability market.

If you remain working and can maintain the insurance through the workplace, becoming eligible for Medicare A and B does not change anything. You can keep that coverage if you choose to. You will have to provide proof of qualifying coverage either then, or when you apply to gain Part D or qualifying coverages in the future if you ever did lose that health care coverage. Retain any supporting documents as necessary.

Some programs combine both Medicare Supplements and Part D in a program called part C, or Medicare Advantage. There are pluses and minuses to these. You need to do your homework before jumping into the program. Many can be restrictive and possibly more out-of-pocket for the year. However, it can be a good fit and save you money.

Transitioning to Medicare A and B and all the other items that attached to it can be confusing, but can become clear in the end. Taking the right steps and getting the right help can make all the difference in the world and save you money and time.

If Your Girlfriend Needs Time, This is How You Give it to Her

As we all know, relationships go through phases. There are the good times and there are the not so good times. It’s quite seasonal in nature. In fact we cant really judge someone just because one season is not as good as the others… In truth you wont see all seasons unless you stick around. In fact, it may even be worth it in the long term.

Using metaphor and analogy in dealing with relationships is great. Try not to define events…in fact try to accept and understand them, its much easier this way. Acceptance is a very beautiful thing. Another persons virtues are just important as yours and mine. During my years in high school and at university I helped a lot of friends, both female and male, they call me their love guru. All I did was listen, I never offered a solution until we both absolutely understood the problem.

I have heard and understood both male and female perspectives and guess what?… they are very very similar. I am no relationship expert, in fact, I really don’t think they exist, because every relationship and person is unique and different. I like to say that wisdom is the best strategy to adopt when dealing with relationship issues. Understanding psychology is just scratching the surface and in fact using it the wrong way is just a manipulative tool that doesn’t achieve love. I would suggest that while giving your woman time, be there for her when she is in good spirits and the bad. Be yourself and that is being the person she fell in love with.

So if you are now going through a season that might seem challenging and hard with your respective other don’t judge her, just accept her. Acceptance is a beautiful thing. What is beautiful can be so hard to describe sometimes. Even in life’s dark moments, there is beauty, and I have seen it.

There are many ways to overcome the conflicts we experience in relationships, there is no golden rule.. All those get-your-ex back articles and psychological techniques are quite manipulative.

Out of my own [and others] life experience[s], using those psychological tactics rarely are a loving way of having a peaceful relationship, they only will turn your love into a battlefield. However, the song made by Pat Benatar is great!

So what do you do if your girlfriend needs time?

**Be a realist and be cool.

The word “cool” is your friend. What do we mean by “cool”? Cool means by refraining from acting irrational and being needy. Lets not put your needs over hers, in fact, the hard times we go through in a relationship will define us- they make us stronger. So be happy, make her happy and show her you actually do care about her while maintaining your self respect. Now lets combine analogy and metaphor, using both wisdom while understanding basic psychology.

Firstly here’s some wisdom, analogy and metaphor; Love is like a tree, it needs sun, it needs “space”, it needs “time” to “grow”. Imagine this as a healthy tree and this healthy tree resembles your relationship. If you want the tree to grow you cant overshadow it and block it from the suns rays, by not giving it space and time and sunlight it will not grow. So try not to block her sunlight by always being around her and not letting her use her own inner resources to solve her own problems. Now for the psychology part. We all have a tendency to move “towards” things in life that we associate pleasure with, and we also have a tendency to move “away” from things in life that we associate pain to. This is true. Have you been pushing her away?

**Show empathy and compassion.

Empathy. Put yourself in her shoes, what is she feeling right now? Can you relate to what she is going through at work, home, friends and most importantly your relationship with her. If she is stressed, don’t stress her out more, instead make every encounter a soothing experience with her, you will not only be making her happy you will be able to show her why you are together and that you are so great, it actually is reinforcing her initial reason of why she loves you. Remember she loved[s] you for a reason. I am very sure you made her happy and excited when she first met you, it is so easy to do it again and better. Why? Because you share history and you are such a great person. Constantly provide value and don’t fear losing her and see what happens.

The word “love”. This word has so many meanings and it is often abused, misleads or scares people away. Well love is everywhere and it is not a definable feeling. Even if your girlfriend has not said I love you, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t. Love is expressed in so many ways. Express your love to her by being patient and accepting her just as she is even if she is being really cold right now. Guys, I quote: “Love is not seeing a perfect person, it is seeing an “imperfect” person perfectly.”

**Go out with your friends or plan a getaway with them.

I am very confident that you will feel refreshed sitting in a spa, having some drinks making a bbq and just relaxing. You will find that the person you were when you met your girlfriend was an outgoing and independent person, don’t lose that independence. If you are having a drink with the boys stay safe and don’t over do it, have fun!

**When she talks to you.

Listen to her. Stay quite. Look in her eyes and don’t interrupt her. Answer all of her questions and be honest.

If you maintain eye contact you will create a deeper understanding, in fact she will really feel listened to. Use empathetic communication. i.e “yeah by what your saying, you must really feel…” Don’t engage in solution based conversation until you both really understand the whole problem. Let her talk and talk and talk, even if you don’t like what she is saying. Sometimes I make this mistake too I just ramble on.

When its time to go your separate ways where ever you are, give her a hug if thats all she likes at the moment, don’t go in for a kiss. You will find over time she will kiss you on the cheek and then slowly she will open up. Say goodnight or what it is you generally say and thank her for coming out. The same goes for her telephone calls.

**Make her feel like she is a great girlfriend.

There is nothing worse than for a woman to think she has been a horrible witch to her boyfriend. Yes they do feel bad if they hurt you. I mean it. Whenever she apologises, forgive her, if you do wrong apologise also. This is a start to some healing. Tell her you think she is great even if she has really upset you the past few weeks.

**Make her laugh.

Its OK to act funny in a manly sense I tend to repeat something and change my tone making it funny. Women love this. Remember girls want to have fun, just like us guys.

**Do not make her jealous using other women.

Yes, jealously is a very strong motivational factor in bringing someone home but, jealously can erode her judgment and make her react for the wrong reason and it wont be out of love, I can assure you. I believe in two forms of jealousy, they are good jealousy and bad jealousy. Good jealousy is generally when we have a small feel of it but it immediately stops then and there and doesn’t toxify your relationship. You feel a certain emotion but it makes you acknowledge you have emotion there.

The good jealously happens while your in a relationship and it doesn’t undermine your self respect or theirs. Bad jealously will do the exact opposite, it continues and plagues your relationship causing suspicion, lack of trust and evidently insecurity. Don’t play around with jealousy, especially with your girlfriend to make her feel jealous, its more powerful than you think and it might bite you back.

**Do not give her an ultimatum.

The worst thing you can do is give her a time-limit on how long your going to stick around for or for her to make a decision. I warn you that you will be the loser. Ultimatums rarely work and this is coming from my experience as a lawyer and understanding of having a win-win situation. If you use an ultimatum, consider it a lose-lose situation.

Its perfectly OK for you to tell her that your getting hurt and frustrated and that the relationship is not what you really want. You could certainly tell her you wont be sticking around if she continues to be cold- You have a right to make your decisions and act on them (If you go down this track you would have obviously thought this over and you really want to end things). Don’t say this to manipulate her to bring her back, she might chase you but its not going to be out of love, it will be out of fear. Trust me acting out of love is much more better to achieve a peaceful relationship in the long run.

**Be strong!

This is a must. I have not seen this anywhere in any online publications. This is not only important for you as a man, but it is important for her to see that you are her rock. If she is going to one day marry you and have your kids, she doesn’t want someone that cant control his emotions and acts like a little kid. Being strong not only makes her feel supported, you will exude confidence the right way.

**Keep balance, exercise, read and eat right.

Stay knowledgeable on world events, read a novel, exercise at the gym and eat right. You will look better, feel better and you will also be occupying your self staying busy. This is not only important for your own well being, it is attractive as you have a world outside theirs.

The reason your girlfriend needs time may not be about you solely, it is about her, respect that. Be open to what she says and let her figure things out her own way and give her as much time as she wants. If you wanted time and you were in her situation, would you want your girlfriend making demands from you. Treat others as you want to be treated and trust me, thats an easy yet bullet proof strategy for your relationship.
